A Master Key to Success in Your Business


Welcome to another issue of the Straight Talk Journal. It's been a snowy Winter so far for many areas around the country. A lot of us have been busy clearing snow from our driveways and sidewalks.

At least it forces us to get a little exercise. But if you're an old guy like me, you don't want to get a heart attack from shoveling all that snow.

There is also another benefit from the bad weather. That is to say, we may not be going out as often. So if we use our time wisely we can get to some of those projects that we've been putting off, or finish some of the things that we have already started.

PLANNING YOUR WORK

I was listening to my favorite radio show recently. The host of the show is Ron Morris, a successful entrepreneur who has started several businesses. He said one of the most important things about starting a business is planning your business strategy.

Now, this may seem like a "no brainer."  But lack of planning is one of the biggest reasons many people fail quickly when trying to start and operate a business. I'm not just talking about writing a business plan, I'm talking about how you are going to do what it takes to give your plan the best chance of actually working.

Too many start-up entrepreneurs seem to think that all they have to do is make the decision to start a business, come up with a business plan, make the investment, and everything else will take care of itself...

What most people fail to consider when going into business is the question: "Why should anybody want to do business with me?"

It doesn't matter what business you start, there is going to be competition. So what is going to make your business different from all of your competitors? This is a very important question to ask yourself, because it may very well determine the success or failure of your business.

Considering how you can make your business different, or stand out from your competition, should be taken into consideration when planning your business strategy.

To get an idea of how you can make your business stand out from the crowd, you'll need to do a little research on your  competition to see what they are doing, or even better, what they are not doing.

When you discover something that other businesses like yours are not doing well, or not doing at all, this should be at the top of your list in working your business plan.

For example, if you sell information on the Internet or by mail order, an easy, inexpensive way to attract potential buyers is to give people a way to contact you directly.

One of the biggest mistakes I see many businesses commiting is that they make it very difficult for potential customers to speak to a real human voice to answer questions about their products, services or program.

I just finished reading a sales letter that made it a point to say that when you call them you will get a live person to talk to. I called the number and sure enough, I talked to a live person. I ended up placing my order right there on the phone.

The fact that I was able to talk to someone and get some questions answered right there gave me the confidence to place my order.

I know this will make a big difference in the response you'll get from your ads. Let me emphasize it again:  ALWAYS INCLUDE A PHONE NUMBER IN YOUR ADS. It will make a big difference. I know this is true from experience.

WORKING YOUR PLAN

Once you've decided on a strategy to stand out from your competition, it's time to put your plan into action. But remember, nothing is written in stone. If you have to make changes as you go along go ahead and make the change. You should be constantly testing and improving your strategies.

You have to be flexible to survive in today's marketplace, but here is something that I always try to keep in mind...

No matter how much technology changes the way that we may market our products or services, when all is said and done, you are still making a sale to another human being. Understand that human beings respond better when they know they can talk to another human being. This is a master key to success in any business.
